I would also like to thank my wonderful mother for composing and framing my fishies 🙂 This has been an amazing Christmas surprise for me after a rough week. All in all, I an happy with the results of my first foray into origami koi fish and look forward to refining my folding and colouring process. Wet folding origami creates a much more smooth product. This is again another artisan technique that I am not familiar with, so I have just been dry folding some craft paper that I have had lying around in the house. Pull the left and right flaps from the middle up and out to the sides. Fold the top and bottom edges to the center. Fold the left and right edges to the middle. Mr Mabona also wet folds his koi from paper that he has hand crafted exclusively for his origami. Fold the paper in half both ways and unfold. I am no artisan, so I slapped to some good ol’ watercolour paint to colour my fishies.

The results look like the fish have been beautifully watercoloured. Mr Mabona adds colour to his koi through an ancient Japanese technique using hand created and dyed paper. My interpretation of Sipho Mabona’s Origami Koi Design

I drew circles into the still wet sand mixture and glued on a pebble in the centre once fully dried. I painted the MDF board white before adding the gritty sand layer. The koi are resting on an MDF board painted with a mixture of sand and modelling paste.

Sipho Mabona origami koi design folded by yours trulyÄŞfter much trial and error, I folded and painted enough koi to make a small piece of artwork.
#ORIGAMI KOI FISH HOW TO#
Poking around with Google linked me to a stop motion video of how to fold Sipho’s origami koi design. His koi fish and swallow origami left me picking up my jaw off the ground.

Won Park does not just specialize in koi. Take a look at his origami koi fish below and you will know why he is dedicating a career to it. I was browsing the Internet one day when my eye was taken by the photograph of an origami koi fish. And that’s what Won Park does, as a full-time profession (for real). Sometimes our creativity can be sparked simply by looking at photographs of the natural world and inspiration can be found in the most surprising places. These freshwater fish are found in Europe, North America, and Asia.
